Be Informed to Give Consent

January 23, 2012

It’s an election year, so it’s a good idea to keep up with what Congress is doing. Elections are just the precursor to the work that Congress does. You elect ‘em, they start legislating. So take a second to find out what your lawmakers are up to. And make sure that in November, you know who to send to Congress, and who to send packin’.

Word is that one thing will happen when Congress returns from recess today is the reintroduction of the Ultrasound Informed Consent Act. Ultrasounds are great. Being fully informed before you get an abortion is even better. Everybody wants to make informed decisions, yes? So, this bill will make sure that women seeking an abortion are able to see a picture of their preborn baby before they make an abortion decision.

Another reason for the bill? Studies show that many women who actually have the chance to see an ultrasound of their child decide not to abort. And that’s a great thing.

Interestingly, lawmakers are considering a bill that would require tanning salons to inform teenagers of the dangers of regular indoor tanning.  Proponents in Congress are very disturbed that the industry lies to teens, falsely telling the girls that they will gain extra vitamin D and other benefits and not telling them of the 70% higher risk of melanoma.  Yet Planned Parenthood has promoted the abortion industry in the same way, avoiding telling the girls of the devastating consequences of abortion while calling it safe; and still too many lawmakers are unmoved by their deceitful ‘counseling’.
