Some Like it Hot—But Should They?

Rising Voice Staff

by Jenny Abel

Alright, quiz time. Ladies first: given the choice, would you rather be called “pretty” or “hot”? Now guys: do you consider “pretty” or “hot” the better compliment for a woman?

A recent article in the National Catholic Register, “The Death of Pretty,” got me thinking about these words, the difference between them, and how their proportionate use/disuse reflects our society’s values. Read More »

Be Informed to Give Consent

It’s an election year, so it’s a good idea to keep up with what Congress is doing. Elections are just the precursor to the work that Congress does. You elect ‘em, they start legislating. So take a second to find out what your lawmakers are up to. And make sure that in November, you know who to send to Congress, and who to send packin’. Read More »

A Night in Vegas

Carrie Kintz

Nights in Vegas are like a dream. The lights of the hotels seem to shine brighter than the stars. It was in the midst of these million dollar twinkling lights that the shadows caught my eye. The silhouette of a young woman, dancing provocatively, displayed for the street to see.  A few blocks later, it was the brightly lit box at street level. A young woman, looking to be in her early twenties was dancing, wearing next to nothing. Passers by stopped to watch, guys made crude jokes and we all moved on. Read More »

How do you vote?

Rising Voice Staff

by Michael Johnson

Crossing the threshold of 2012 means political ads and news stories will compete for our attention as the Republican Party seeks a nominee to face President Obama in November. The Iowa Caucus kicked off the journey through the various states as Americans have opportunity to participate in our government and influence who our leader will be for the next four years.

As a law student, I was curious to see what my fellow students thought was important when it came to choosing a president.  I discussed the current Republican nominees and President Obama with eleven other young adults who consider themselves Christians. Their ages ranged from 19-28 yrs and they represented eight different states: CA, CO, LA, MD, TN, TX, VA, and WA.  Here’s what they had to say. Read More »

Ding, Dong, Merrily on High…

Rising Voice Staff

Regardless of how you celebrate Christmas, one of its most universal aspects is music. We all have our favorites, from the lighter tunes to the more profound melodies, and our least favorites (like crazy renditions of “Here Comes Santa Claus” that grate on your nerves as you shop). The great thing about Christmas music is that it can be a blessing to anyone regardless of life situation, no matter if you’re spending the holiday alone, hurting, missing a loved one, in danger (such as those on military duty abroad), or surrounded by a loving family. Christmas carols offer comfort, reflection, joy, encouragement, a sense of anticipation, and deep Truth.

What are your favorite Christmas songs or musical traditions?

I’ll share one of mine: every year the high school I attended has a tradition of performing an abbreviated version of Handel’s Messiah. I love returning to that performance when I can—and if I can’t (since I no longer live in the same town), I love listening to a recording of the Messiah all the way through. In addition to bringing back personal memories (I sang in the production my senior year), the progression from the prophetic phrases of the Old Testament prophet Isaiah, to the birth of Christ, the Passion, the Resurrection, and the hope of His Second Coming, is a great reminder of the full significance of this season.

The Christmas Story of Life

Rising Voice Staff

by Jenny Abel

In the November elections, the issue of life—and when exactly it begins inside a woman—was on the ballot again. Fifty-five percent of Mississippi voters, however, rejected an amendment that would have defined personhood as beginning at the moment of fertilization. If it had passed, the definition would have, in effect, criminalized. Read More »
