Top 10 Things You Can Do
1) Host a movie night dedicated to exploring a social issue and discuss afterwards with your friends.
Example: Blind Side, Slum dog Millionaire, Blood Diamond, Bella, Juno, Fireproof, Taken
2) Volunteer your time once a month to help in your community.
“Example: visit a soup kitchen, nursing home, pregnancy resource center, or help a neighbor with yard work. Pick a family in your church or community and volunteer to watch their kids so they can go on a date night. P.S. Invite a friend.
3) Give up one of your regular splurges (lattes, shopping trips, movies, etc) for months and put that money toward supporting an organization or cause that you’re passionate about.
Example: Two lattes a week = the sponsorship of an impoverished child.
4) Simplify your life and use your excess to help others.
Example: Clean out your closet and donate your extra clothes (not just stuff you should throw away) and donate them to Good Will, Salvation Army etc. Or, sell some of your gadgets on eBay and give the money to someone in need or a disaster relief agency.
5) Gather a group of friends to discuss what you can do to make a difference in your local community.
6) Research an issue that you’re passionate about and challenge yourself to think deeply. Read a book or find a website about the topic. Educate yourself by finding an expert in the field. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
7) Stay informed on current events and get involved.
Example: Subscribe to a daily news source or set up a Google alert on a specific topic. Comment on an article online. Call or write your elected official.
8) Use social media to raise awareness about an issue or cause.
Example: Send a text, update your FB status, join a FB group, or film a YouTube video on an issue.
9) Speak up for something you believe in – consider discussing an issue you care about with your friends, even if it’s not popular. Be thoughtful about how you communicate it. Stay positive, listen, be truthful yet gracious in your approach.
10) Prayerfully consider what God would have you do to make a difference in your generation and your world.
